Devin Ratray is the son of two actors. He was born in New York City on January 11, 1977. He got his first acting role when he was only nine years of age. The movie was Where Are the Children and was released in 1986. As a youngster, Ratray continued to act in various small roles and bit parts for several years before being cast in the holiday hit movie, Home Alone. Ratray lived in New York throughout his childhood. He attended and eventually graduated in 1994 from Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School.
Always the Bully
Ratray's size and often menacing look won him many roles, most of them casting him as a larger than life bully. As Ronnie Coleman in the movie Little Monsters, Ratray was portrayed as a bully. He appeared in the movie Dennis the Menace, not so much as a bully, but as the imposing boyfriend of the young girl who was hired to babysit for Dennis. Although none of these roles gained him much visibility or attention, they did earn him a reputation as a dedicated actor, even at his young age.
Ratray also tried out and won the role of Eddy in The Prince and Me. Unlike the roles where he played a bully, this time Ratray played the roommate of a Prince. In this movie, he was mostly known for his obsession with computer games. With each acting role he earned, he gained more and more experience. When the role of Buzz McAllister became available, it was his opportunity to prove himself.
Meet Buzz McAllister
Even in the small roles he played, the majority of them typecast him as an unfriendly ogre of a child who would rather beat someone up than talk to them. It was this character stereotype that won Ratray the role of Buzz McAllister in both Home Alone and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. Although the Buzz McAllister role did offer a glimpse at the nice kid behind the facade, it was normally Buzz's antics that set things in motion and wound up the other cast members.
From Movies to Music
In addition to the many movies and television programs, Ratray appeared on, he was also well known as an improv actor who performed regularly on Damage Control, one of MTV's offerings. His many television appearances included Law & Order, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and Supernatural. He also won roles in the movie Slippery Slope, Serial, and Surrogates.
Ratray is also known for his songwriting skills and currently plays in a band called Little Bill and the Beckleys. Although they have never had a major hit, they play regularly in and around the New York area. Another member of the band, Bill Mumy, also has a list of acting credits to his name. He played the young Will Robinson in he 1960's television series, Lost in Space.
Still Acting
One of Ratray's most controversial projects is known as Courting Condi. The actor took a documentary crew along for the ride as he began to court Condoleezza Rice. He tried to win her over by sending numerous love letters, letters set to music and a variety of images. He traveled across the country looking for ways to serenade to the object of his affection. A few of the places he visited include Washington, D.C., Denver, Palo Alto, Alabama, and New York. The film was set to be released in 2008 and targeted an international audience.
Since that time, Ratray has starred in Elevator in 2012. In 2013, he appeared in Nebraska, Blue Ruin and the film R.I.P.D. Lately, he has appeared in The Lennon Report (2016), Masterminds (2016), The Tick (2017 and 2019), and the Good Fight in 2018.
