“I don't act because I love doing it, I act because it's my job. At the end of the year, I gotta pay my taxes, bills, doctors, insurance, car insurance, the occasional vacation. It's a wonderful job. The upside is that it is exciting and different... the downside is that it is an extremely insecure job.” Born in Burbank, California, he is the youngest son of actors Rance and Jean Howard. His older brother is Ron Howard, a film maker and actor.
TV Career
His career began at the age of two when he starred in five episodes of the The Andy Griffith Show, a show his brother Ron was acting in. He played the role of Leon. Some of his earliest roles include: The Streets of San Francisco and The Virginian. He was in Breaking Point in 1963 at the age of four. He was starred in one episode of The Fugitive.
His first major role was a series regular on Gentle Ben from 1967-1969. He also starred in an episode of Rod Serling’s Night Garry as Herbie. He also was in many Star Trek episodes and in a made for television film, The Red Pony. In 2003, he was on Arrested Development as Johnny Bark. He has also guest starred on shows such as Heroes, My Name is Early, Married…With Children and Seinfeld, to name a few.
Film Career
His film debut was in 1963 in the film, The Courtship of Eddie’s Father. He also was the voice of Roo in many Disney shorts including Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day and Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree. He also was the voice of Hathi Jr. in The Jungle Book. He has appeared in 17 films that were directed by his brother Ron including Old Pain, Grand Theft Auto, Parenthood and even Whobris in How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
“There's always gonna be people with a lot of money making film, and the goal is to make profit and carry on. It is a business. The goal is to make a living doing it and to be comfortable.” Other roles he has had were in Frost/Nixon, Rock ‘n’ Roll High School, Little Nicky, The Cat in the Hat, Speed Dating and many more.
Music Career
In 1981, he formed a new wave rock and roll band, the Kempsters. They never released an album together, but he distributed a CD with four tracks called No Brains at All and seven tracks that were never recorded together live in 1982. The band disbanded in 1983.
Personal Life
Howard married Melanic Sorich in October of 1995. In 2017, they divorced after 22 yers of marriage. He is an avid golfer who had to quit because of hip replacement surgeries. He used to golf about 150 rounds a year. He also makes snow globes that are well known. They have no kids together.
Homes
Howard purchased a modest 3-bedroom, 3-bathroom 1,864 square foot home in Burbank in January 1995 for $207,000. He has an estimated net worth of $4 million. They owned a 2006 Honda Accord and a 2005 Chrysler 300.
Political Beliefs
Howard is Republican and has previously endorsed Ted Cruz for president in 2016. He has even spoken at the California GOP convention. He mentions he avoids talking about politics on set as many of his co-stars don’t agree with him politically. "If the entertainment industry should turn on me, I'd say, 'well fine.' But for young conservatives, you may hear me speak out but let me tell you: Be careful," he said. He said it’s difficult to be conservative in Holly and if he stays silent, he is enabling people and letting them win. He wants people to know there are Conservative actors in Hollywood.
